Western Training & Starting

Herdy Co. specializes in western horse training and colt starting, with a focus on producing calm, usable, and confident horses. We work strictly western and train with real-world purpose—building horses that are safe, responsive, and ready to go to work or ride.

Training Rate

$1500/month

Includes:

  • Training and handling

  • Exposure work and hauling during training

  • Feed

 

Not included:

  • Farrier services

  • Veterinary care

  • Supplements

Our Program

Colts are started correctly from the ground up, emphasizing good manners, softness, and a solid foundation under saddle. Training is done at the horse’s pace, prioritizing understanding and confidence over shortcuts or pressure.

A key strength of our program is exposure-based training. Horses are regularly hauled and worked in different environments, helping them learn to load, travel, and handle new situations calmly. This creates well-rounded horses that are comfortable off the property and dependable in unfamiliar settings.

We emphasize:

  • Solid groundwork and handling

  • Safe colt starting under saddle

  • Calm exposure to real-world situations

  • Building confidence, responsiveness, and trust​

Training is honest, practical, and built for real work—not shortcuts.

Exposure-based Training

  • Horses are regularly hauled off-property during training

  • Exposure may include:

    • Trailering practice

    • Working in new environments

    • Time around cattle

    • Roping exposure when appropriate

    • Hauling to horse shows and rodeos when possible

  • Horses are worked both alone and with other horses

Expectations & Requirements

  • Most horses should be riding reasonably well around 30 days, though progress varies by horse

  • We do not guarantee results, as every horse learns at a different pace

  • We are selective about the horses we accept and honest about suitability for our program

  • Western colt starting and training only

  • Horses are kept outdoors; we do not offer stall housing

  • We take a limited number of horses at one time to ensure quality, hands-on training

  • Horses must be well handled prior to arrival

  • All horses must be up to date on vaccinations, and papers will need to be shown. 

  • 60-day minimum training commitment

Owner Communications

  • Owners are welcome to visit, but riding is not permitted during training

  • Training updates are provided every other week

  • If your horse is not progressing as expected, we will recommend other trainers or solutions outside of our program

  • Owners will be notified immediately if a horse becomes injured

  • Injuries and next steps are discussed directly with the owner
